We just replaced the 4 rear tires on our 2008 2551.  Just under 40K miles, still had some good rubber, but the side walls were cracking, decided to replace for peace of mind.  Here in the Pacific Northwest, Les Schwab Tire Stores have an excellent reputation, and getting service from one store to another is never a problem.  (All 3 of our batteries are also Schwab.)  Even though their stores only go east to Utah and south to mid-Calif., most of our travel will be in that region, but Schwab will still provide assistance if outside that area.

Schwab only sells Toyo tires.  We've had their passenger car tires, but have no experience with RV or any other tires.  But they service a lot of RVs, plus travel & boat trailers.

We feel totally comfortable with the Toyo tires since that is what Schwab sells.  Other folks may have a different opinion/experience with this brand.

We have a 2008 2551/s.  The area under the passenger-side bed has the furnace towards the rear, some plumbing up to the kitchen area, ducting, and two drawers towards the front.  The layout precludes reclaiming any additional storage space (at least to justify the amount of labor for the tiny amount of additional space).

Under the driver's side bed is the water pump and storage tank, one cupboard with a door next to the bathroom.  I don't remember what is forward of the water storage tank (which all by itself is troublesome!), but I don't remember any usable space.  Our inverter and control panel are under the refrigerator.  Again, not much in the way of reclaimable space.

Since we don't shower every day, we have a couple plastic tubs that are easy to move in and out of the shower stall.

It's been quite some time since I looked at the YouTube videos of construction of a PC (a 2551, maybe?, from around 2008), but you might watch them to see if they're of any use (if you're in a hurry, I think Part 2 might be the most relevant):

Hi Ron,

We probably do have the same backup system.  I tested the sound by turning the volume all the way up, didn't get any sound out of the speaker at all, not even a hissing sound (although I was exercising the generator at the time, maybe I just couldn't hear it).  The old monitor doesn't appear to have a speaker like the new one (it's in the back).

I replaced the camera last year (Apr 2013), model 313.C; I didn't see anything that made me think it might have a microphone, although according to the specs it should have one.  As I said earlier, it may have to do with 8-wire vs. 13-wire cabling.  I really don't know, just speculating.

I'm going back out to the rig later this week, I'll look at the manual and play around with the settings some more.  If I learn anything, I'll post back.

Since it appears the old monitor wasn't working very well from the get-go ("pre-owned", we purchased in 2012), I'm very happy just to have a usable monitor, and since I didn't have sound to start with, I'm not really missing it.  (We do have walkie-talkies when we need them.)  But it it's there, I'll find it, and let you know.

Doneworking:  I really looked into replacing the whole system with a wireless setup.  But I'd already invested in the new camera just a year ago, and I never saw any reviews for wireless systems that made me want to discard the new and start over.  I have no issues with wireless, but it would have taken a 6 stars out of 5 rating to get me to switch  Grin.  Obviously, I didn't find one like that.

If I decide to go wireless in the future, I would seriously consider a Zone Defense system.  They have one with a 7-in monitor.  And their systems are aimed primarily at truckers, secondarily at RVers.  I would think they would not have interference problems with all the other "stuff" in an RV (electronics, inverters, converters, satellite antennas, what-not), plus would be able to handle all those potholes out there trying to eat our rigs.  But that's just more speculating on my part.

And based on my recent research, today I would be very suspicious of a $79 wireless camera! If something sounds too good to be true...

But be sure to post when you do decide on your next system.  I'd be far more likely to trust info on the PC Forum before most reviews elsewhere, even Amazon!

I can finally close this out.  It was a struggle, but today I installed a replacement monitor.  I went with the same-sized 5-in Zone Defense monitor.  Received the final piece -- an adapter cable -- last Friday, installed it today.

To get to this point, after my last posting, I called the factory, and was referred to Ramco Engineering in Elkart.  It wasn't easy getting a call-back, but when I finally talked to a rep, they agreed that I needed to keep calling and "nagging" them for assistance.  However...

While waiting for them to reply, I tried to contact Zone Defense directly, leaving phone messages for their sales rep, but I've never heard back from them at all.  My last email correspondence with the factory is also still unanswered after several weeks.  However...

It turns out that Ramco Eng. is the U.S. Distributor for Zone Defense.  Ramco is also one of the suppliers of PC side mirrors.  Anyway, I finally settled on dealing with them.

But also in the meantime, I tried other sources found on the web, including Amazon.  I don't do Ebay, but that might have been an option if I became desperate enough.  In the end, Ramco turned out to be my best bet.

Nobody wanted to stick their neck out regarding replacing the 5-in monitor with a 7-in monitor.  For my 2008 2551, it would have required two adapter cables:  from the 7-in monitor a 13-pin to 22-pin cable (CBL.354.G), and then the 13-pin to 8-pin cable to connect to the existing coach wiring (CBL.354.C).  The factory, via Ramco, indicated it was possible, but not recommended, due to signal loss.  So all things considered (incl. age of the coach), I decided to stick with the simplest replacement.

I could have field tested the 7-in monitor and extra adapter cable, and returned it if it wasn't satisfactory.  But there would have been shipping both ways, plus a re-stocking fee.  Besides the added expense, there would have been added time.

The new monitor does have a speaker, but my best guess is that the existing wiring doesn't support the intercom (or maybe my camera doesn't have a microphone -- don't know).  If it does have one, I can't see it.

Apart from having to "nag" Ramco to get back to me on a couple of occasions, I am totally satisfied with their customer service.  Their info is in the Links and Contacts board, but note that they are also suppliers for Zone Defense camera backup systems.

Finally, we can now get back to planning our traveling...

We just replaced our factory monitor by wiring the camera into our radio/GPS.  Would you like the monitor?   It's a Voyager model AOM562A, 5 1/2 inches on the diagonal.  Worked when we removed it.  It's yours if you like.


Hi Bill,

That's a very generous offer.  Some internet searching indicates it's a good monitor.  Do you know if the connecting cables are compatible with my existing 8-pin cables, also with the Zone Defense 313.C camera?  My research didn't provide any clues.

My abilities are limited to (sometimes) replacing existing installations.  Modifying/adapting is usually outside my wheel house without a bunch of hand-holding.  (And occasional hand-wringing!  Grin  Okay, frequent.)

Let me know what you think after reading the above.

And thank you for the offer.  Just one more example of the amazing nature of the folks on this forum.

I like the plastic lattice with magnets solution, will keep that in mind for the future.

For our Airedale, we've been using an adjustable wood child safety gate, similar to this one at Walmart:

Sometimes we use it to keep him in the back of the coach.  Multi-function. Grin

Anyway, they're available almost everywhere  -- hardware & department stores, etc.

Looking forward to other solutions being posted here...

I'm getting ready to order a replacement backup monitor, but before I pull lthe trigger, thought I'd see if there were any opinions or suggestions.

It's a Zone Defense system.  I replaced the camera in Jan 2013, with a ZD model 313.C.  I was never happy with the monitor, but it worked somewhat better with the new camera.  Now the monitor needs replacement, just doesn't work.  (Camera connections are fine, as I did it myself, so that can't be the problem, right?  Actually, I followed several tips I found here before installing, so I really am confident in that installation.)

Emails with the Engineer at ZD results in my deciding to order the 7" M.302 monitor, but that would need a cable adapter (13-pin to 22-pin).  However, the cable in the RV is 8-pin, so it looks like I would need the 8-to-13-pin adapter, then the 13-to-22-pin adapter -- I'm still waiting for a reply from ZD on that.

I"m looking to go the simplest/least expensive route, meaning  I'd prefer to replace it myself without re-wiring the whole RV.

So any insights, suggestions or opinions would be welcome.

Not sure if this is useful, but we traveled from 8/26/2013 to 10/16/2013, putting on about 9,500 miles.  Without a tow vehicle.  So almost every day we ran the slide in and out, and the pop-out worked like it was supposed to every time.  Our rig is a 2007 2551/s.

From Aug 2012 to May 2013, we lived full time in the rig, traveling some, but staying put for a lot of that time, except for the period of mid-Jan 2013 to late Mar 2013, and during that time, the pop-out was exercised regularly.

When we were originally shopping for a motorhome, we really didn't want a pop-out because of all the supposed problems, but we fell in love with this rig, so decided to chance it.  Haven't regretted it yet.  (Knocking on wood vigorously!!!)

Hopefully your problem is just a minor inconvenience.

  The question I put out there is how much is the approximate cost that our members who have replaced their tires incurred? I went on the Michelin site and they gave a cost of about 250.00 a tire.  I do not know about the spare and I will have to check on it.

I got the two front tires replaced by a local dealer under the Michelin recall, by a local dealer.  I asked the dealer what it would have cost me if I'd paid for them myself, and he said $200 per tire, plus $30 each for balancing, mounting and new valve stems.  He also said that the price would be the same for the rear tires, plus a small charge for the extra valve stems.

This was a local dealer, not regional or national chain; they are Michelin dealers, the tires were not in stock, but they had them the next day.  The local Big O Tire shop would have required me to bring the rig in for them to verify the DOT stamp before ordering the tires, which were out of stock at the servicing Big O warehouse.  FWIW.

Our PC2100 is in storage but I do have a photo of the tire which show all the recalled info EXCEPT the production date. In the Michelin example it follows the dot sequence, but not on my tire. I have a bunch of other weird numbers there. I called Michellin and they said sometimes the production date is on the back of the tire. Has anyone else run into this problem?

The good news is that, as per the person I spoke with on the Michelin recall line, there is not any time limit to get the tires replaced. Guess I will figure it out next April when the snow melts.

I ran into the same thing:  instead of the date code I had 2 rows of smaller numbers.

My two front tires were replaced Feb 2013.  A call to the shop (about 3 hrs south) revealed that they were installed with the date code on the inside.  They confirmed that the tires were part of the recall.  A local shop was able to replace them in less than an hour, no charge to me.

The paperwork for the old tires indicated the correct DOT numbers, but when I couldn't find them I was a bit concerned.  But it turned out ok.

Apparently, some tire manufacturers are starting to put the DOT numbers on both sides.

I agree with Tom.

On our 2008 2551, whenever I have to crank more than once,  I only prime on the first attempt.  I've never gone more than 3 attempts before it would start, even after 2 months of not being used.  But on occasion I have held the starter for up to 15 seconds.

George did you drain the water out of the lines and the tanks, including the water heater before you stored it?

I once saw a water heater tank that split down the back from the water freezing and no where to go but out the back. He also had several of the facets crack.  Cry

Unfortunately, no.  We weren't intending to store long term, wanted it available on a moments notice.  By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late to drain, all was frozen.  As I said before, this weather was extremely sudden, and far more severe than anyone anticipated.  We've been concerned about family in Boulder, CO, and near Minneapolis, MN, were certain we were ok.

I was almost tempted to turn the water heater on, the cold was befuddling my brain, but I came to my senses.

Replacing the water heater would be -- ok, probably will be -- bad.  I'm guessing there's going to be issues with the water pump as well (haven't figured out exactly where it's at, even).  I'm most concerned with the water lines, that will be a major problem replacing.

I see you're on the East Coast:  they're predicting this stuff is coming your way.  Good luck!

I hope it all turns out well.  How full are your tanks?

We've had a similar unusual week, but not as bad, here in the Bay Area north of San Francisco.  Low 50's during the day but into the 20's at night.  Ironically, our PC is sitting inside in one of the warmish repair bays of our local RV shop for a thermostat/heating issue.  I'm pretty happy that they've been too busy to finish the job quickly.

The two waste tanks were mostly empty, so I'm hoping/guessing they won't be damaged.  The fresh water tank was maybe 1/4 to 1/3 full -- fingers crossed on that one.

The plan was to winterize just after Christmas.  Since it will be in a shop somewhere, I'm thinking that won't be a problem.

Well, I seem to be the odd-man-out here.  In the fall, I winterize the water system, fill up with gas, run the engine and generator after putting STA-BIL fuel stabilizer in the gas tank, check the water in the batteries, set the electrical system to Store, cover the windows and tires, and lock the door.  Its not unusual to have winter temperatures in the 10s and 20s here, and occasionally below zero.  Its expected to be 14⁰ here tomorrow night with five inches of snow.  In the spring, it starts right up.  I dont have the luxury of storing it at home, but check it inside and out every three to four weeks at a rented, secure, outdoor storage facility.  Weve had motorhomes for 25 years and never had a problem.

We did all that except winterize the water system.  It's just too early here to need to do that.  This time last year, just normal high winds and horizontal rain.

We really wanted to be able to just hop in the rig and take off at a moments notice once or twice before Christmas.  Will have to re-think this next year.

We were in the Central Oregon coast, full-timing, between Oct 2012 & Jan 15, 2013, had one night of freezing but only for a couple of hours; spent last Jan-Feb-Mar traveling in Northern and Central California.  Absolutely gorgeous weather, very mild temps, rained once or twice around Crescent City, did have one night when it froze, but we weren't prepared for that, didn't do anything, discovered the freezing the next morning, but the water line had become unfrozen before I could disconnect.  Totally opposite of what's happening now.

Okay, now the flakes are getting big and fluffy.  Under other circumstances, it would be enjoyable.  Somewhere in the world it's after 6pm, so I think I'll indulge in some adult beverage   Wink  and enjoy the show.

I see that I didn't make it clear:  we are getting a hard freeze, just like most of the rest of the country.  Today's high is supposed to be 33!  2nd night in a row in the mid-20's, supposed to continue for a few more days.

It's been 20+ yrs since there was a freeze even remotely this hard in this part of Oregon (southern OR, I-5 corridor).  Caught everyone by surprise.  It's snowing now, expecting 2-4" today.  Totally unprepared. 

25 yrs ago we lived in Idaho on Hwy 12, we dealt with this kind of weather most years.  Not supposed to be like this here:  I'd prefer to drive to see the snow, not live in it! Smile  Don't even own a shovel anymore!

It looks like I won't know the extent of damage until next Tues-Wed.  I'm expecting the worst (just don't know what the worst is).

   In Oregon did you winterize,,, I do not down here in Houston,,, it has been years since we have had a hard freeze,,,  how ever if we do I would be doing the same thing, probably bring the Beast home put it in the driveway to keep it warmer.

Unfortunately, I didn't winterize.  Cry  This weather was totally unexpected and very sudden, not typical for where we're at; it is extremely unusual for this to happen, maybe mid-20s for just 1 or 2 nights, and just a couple of hours each night.  A couple of days ago it was low-50s during the day, low-40s at night.

We just returned from a 7-week, 9,200+ mile trip on Oct 16, and were planning on rolling out for a couple of days next week, hadn't planned the exact date.  Shouldn't have needed to winterize, especially this early in the season.  I suspect I'm going to pay dearly for this oversight.

Parking at home just isn't an option, just a small carport, no on-site room to park, and on-street parking not allowed.  No indoor storage units available anywhere nearby.

It looks like the Houston area might be one of the few areas that won't be hit hard by this system.  Might be time for a country tune:  "Wish I was in Houston in December...."   Smile

And to make matters worse, got the Airedale groomed today.  He is really p.o.'d at us.

During the heat of a hot summer day, we will turn on the generator in order to run the roof a/c while driving down the road. In the winter I take the PC out every three to four weeks and drive it around for about 20 miles for its monthly workout. It heats up the engine, warms up the tires to keep them from dry rotting and keeps my driving skills up to date. During this drive I run the generator and the roof a/c's heat strip. Everything gets it work out at once. Running anymore often than once a week is over kill in my opinion, every three weeks does the trick.

Thank you, Tom. a very helpful answer.  I was really hoping I could run both at the same time.  Neither system gets short-changed in its workout.   Smile

I was following a workout plan similar to yours, every 3-4 weeks, planning to go on occasional overnight jaunts.  I (like a few other folks, I suspect) was totally unprepared for this arctic winter blast.  This isn't supposed to happen in this part of Oregon, maybe 1-2 nights in a row of below freezing.  But this is forecast to last for several more days.  (The news this morning reported that this is the first time in a very long time -- if ever -- that the entire state was below freezing.  Even over on the coast!)  So depending on road conditions, for the next week or so I'll try to go out every couple of days and give it a run.  Just for my piece of mind.
