Thought I'd post this tip for those Seniors (62+) that are not familiar with the America the Beautiful Senior Pass.  The website is http://www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm.  What is great about this pass is that camping fees at most federal parks are half price.  So those going to WP Franklin this winter (since it is a Corp of Engineering Park), with an America the Beautiful Senior Pass pay half price (i.e. $12).  You also get free admission into the Narional Parks as well as half price on most other fees such as Ranger Tours.  The  pass covers entrance and standard amenity fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person).  So if you don't personally qualify but your spouse does you can ride on his pass (as I do).

They require that you have your pass with you and you need to also show ID.

A great hint. I've been on it for almost 10 years and it just can't be beat.

And the entrance fees have gone up.  I figure with the pass we saved something on the order of $125 in 3 weeks and several NP's.  The biggest plus for me is that while cash customers line up there seems to be an automatic card reader lane or a pass lane with virtually no waiting.

We were envious of the senior pass when we had a young family.  We really struggled financially (really really struggled) traveling in our early years with young children.  It was the only affordable vacationing we could do, and we did it bare bones.  There were many times we elected to camp where there were none or minimal fees like in near by national forests and BLMs.  But today, even they have notable camping fees.

We are now 8 years away from age 62 and hope our day will come to benefit.  But with the condition of our economy and it's projected future, we wonder if the various senior benefits will continue.  The only thing we can count on is a senior coffee at McDonalds, and we are just a year away from that.

Everyone might want to check out this national park service web site about park passes. There are passes for the seniors-$10, military-free, volunteers-free with 250 hours and everyone else-$80. At $80 a year and major parks charging $25 a week it would not take long to start saving.
