Hi Folks,

How do you handle getting bills and other critical incoming mail on the road? 

We haven't yet been out longer than a month and so far, have been able to prepay the bills before we left.   The month, from Oakland, CA to Detroit, MI and back, was the trip that convinced us to get a larger RV.  The Road Trek was simply too small for two people and a Corgi.  We three are loving the PC!

Mail....Critical?... rolling on the floor  Grin   Now that that's over,  over time I have converted our monthly, usual bills iton autopay.  Let me think...Tele, Ele, LpGas, insurance.... uh trash is by the colored bag - once a month recycle I tend to pay every quarter & call the office to let them know I'll be gone & recall when home.  oh, credit card is connected to bank account .  Property tax has a window of payment so I generally pay early.  We have usually been gone a bit more or less than two months.  The state drivers license & yearly car tags fall when we have been gone & I go into local state office to plead with the bureaucrats for help - they have given me the secret # to call in Lansing for help.

I think living in a small town helps us deal with possible problems as I can wander into the actual places that send me bills and after they  rolling on the floor rolling on the floor on the floor and roll their eyes we solve the problem.

I'll ask Linda for any more helpful ideas.

Moms in a home, 3 bills we write a check for almost everything else is on one or the credit card, then I go on line (credit cards) check-um and pay-um. IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO CONVINCE MY BRIDE.

We've been out of town up to 6 weeks on RV trips or long cruises.  As mentioned, I usually pay my bills in advance where possible.  All my finances are through a single vendor - checking, savings, investments, credit cards, and on line bill pay.  Also as mentioned before, you can either call the numbers on the credit cards you have or go to a website and check balances and usually pay online.  If I don't think it'll be convenient for something like the electric bill, I simply look at my history and stick a payment for about 150% of the expected bill out there at the normal due date.  The excess just goes to a credit balance and gets applied to the next bill.  The one thing I personally will NOT do is set up an automatic debit account.  With a debit account, the billing company controls the payment, not you.  To get the account debiting stopped, you have to get the other party to notify the bank, not you the account holder.  As Mitt Romney says, I want to be able to fire the people who I pay to work for me.

For the last 3 summers, we have been on the road for 2-3 monthes. We forwarded our mail to our sister. Our two utility bills (electric and water/sewer) are debited from our checking account. We try to use credit cards when travelling and then pay them by phone. After the first year, we got it down pat!

Part of gettting retirement for me was having all our invoices changed over from snail mail to electronic billing.  I don't set up automatic payment plans - just receive the invoice and set up the payment through my credit union (for free!).  With laptop and MIFI on the road; I don't think we're missing anything.

We use a forwarding service from Family Motorcoach Association and it works well.  The service is part of membership benefits with FMCA.  We travel 3 months out of the year.  Our mail is forwarded to the FMCA office and (when we request) it is delivered to wherever we are via general delivery to a post office.

We are generally gone for 3 months or more in the winter months.  Most of our bills are autopay including our credit card.  For those that are not we make a few copies of the remittance portion of the bill prior to leaving home, take a few envelopes and then we call for the amount when the billing date arrives.  My sister lives across the street from us so she picks up our mail and sends it to general delivery every six weeks or so.  We have been doing this for a few years and it has been working good so far.
We would not be without internet access while traveling.  We can always look up bills due online as well.  However, we do not pay any bills online or look at any bank statements on line.  Having worked in the computer field for many years we do not trust the WIFI access.

We used the Escapees Mail Forwarding service while we were full-timeing for 5 years.  One thing I liked was an e-mail any week they didn't forward any mail. So you don't have to delay pulling out if you are expecting something  important.  Escapees processes more mail than the city of Livingston,Texas.
