Any pets travel with you?
« on: February 19, 2012, 05:54:18 pm »
How many of you have pets who regularly travel with you? What kind are they? What are the joys (and/or sorrows) of traveling with them? Do any of you have unusual pets? We met a couple last summer who regularly travel with their two parrots.

We have two Chihuahuas, Pepper and Ginger, who have been on several trips with us. They're very good travelers. We also have a cat, Mikey, who years ago, when he was too little to leave at home, went with us as far as Niagara Falls and back and did very well. Now we leave him at home with our daughter checking on him regularly.

We're looking forward to the Cruiser since the dogs can move back and forth between the cab and the rest of the rv easily. Now, we have to move them back and forth from the cab to the Lance and that's a lot of trouble.

We used to travel with a chihuahua and two cats. The 3 played well together, also in a 34" A.  Don't how that would work or how I would feel about it in the 2700.
Might be a little tight.

Our cat has a dog ...  :)

On the road they are OK.  They actually rode better in a truck towing a 5th wheel, go figure.   (WH)  But once parked and set-up, they love the adventure and do very well in the small confines of out 2350.   2o2

For a balanced life one should have a dog to adore you and a cat to ignore you !

When we had the 2350, we had two dogs, a 125 lb German Shepherd Dog and a 80 lb lab. Sometimes they would share the sofa, other times they would take turns using it. The lab had to go onto doggy heaven so now it is just the GSD. We now have the 2552 with more room and less dogs. He sometimes will share the sofa with my wife but never with me. If I sit on the sofa he will get off it and lay on the floor. A few times we have had problems with campgrounds that have a size or breed restriction. Around the Tampa area they like little dogs only and most campgrounds don't like Dobbies or Rotwellers. I find it is the smaller dogs that want to take on our GSD, while the larger ones get along just fine.
We had a cat for many years but she hated going in the car or the motorhome, so she stayed home and was happy.

We would like to get a cat but are unsure of how well they travel.  We had a cat pre-PC, and she was terrified of riding in a car.  Was that typical?  Does it work best starting of as a kitten?  Would prefer to get an adult catÖ
I remember very few of the things that Iíve spent money to buy, but I remember all of the places that Iíve spent money to see.

gophoenix,

We have traveled at various times with 3 cats, two were adult at first time out and one about 6 months or so.  The first we tried in a carrier in the back seat of a Ford pickup, foamed at the mouth and moaned/waled/cried for the first mile - couldn't stand much of that and let her out, she curled up on a towel on the console and the next 2100 miles were trouble free except for the carrier that was in the way.  She probably had 20-25K miles on her frame when cancer ended her touring. The next two we let them pick their own destiny in the class A and after a couple miles they found their places and all was good.  We have been told by several vets that cats don't travel well, but our experience is somewhat biased since we have really not seen an unsolvable problem.  None have traveled in the PC,  we have since found/explored using cat/house sitters and that seems to be working better at this stage of our travels/lives.  Gotta admit about a week/10 days out, a frequent topic becomes: wonder what the kitties are doing?  Cats are kinda strange little fur people, they seem to like being with their people or just being left at home doesn't seem to really affect them all that much either way.  Would not try that with a well integrated family dog though - separation anxiety can really mess their little pea brains up. One thing that I absolutely will not do is kennel any animal unless sick.

We travel with a 3 pound Toy Poodle.  She is no problem.  She actually sleeps with Margo on one of our twin beds.  It is amzing the number of dogs we see in RV's when we travel.

We had a female cat for 17 years but she never travelled with us.  We currently have no pets.

We have a small "chiweinie" that enjoys traveling almost as much as we do.  Although we take her out nearly every time we stop, we do put down some "potty paper" in the bathroom when we're driving or when we are away from the RV for any length of time.

We spent 1 1/2 hours today doing water aerobics, I feel like a water dog.      (WH)
