We are planning a trip to Washington DC for the second week of May.  Are initial thought is to stay at the Cherry Hill Campground and take the metro into DC.  We do not plan on taking the toad.  Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone that has gone.

Thanks

Excellent choice.   We stayed at a campground in Gettysburg, and then took a bus to WDC.  But if you want to spend more time than one day there, it is best the way your planning it.

Have fun\

Hi guys,
Hope all is well and you are home safe and sound.

Last year we were planning to go and were going to stay at the park in Greenbelt MD. It is a Federal Park so the Golden Age Pass applies. From what I understand there is a bus right from the park.

We were there three years ago. We contacted our Rep. for a tour of the White House. It was well worth it. All you have to do is call his/her office and they will arrange tickets for that and the Capitol.

We toured DC in 2003 for multiple days.  We tried first with a vehicle, then quickly learned that public transportation is the only method that works, and it works great.  Be sure to buy the all day or multi-day pass, whatever they offer.

Stay outside in a camp ground and train in & out daily.  They restrict street parking in the main areas to avoid another Oklahoma City bombing style attack.

Wear good walking shoes and use the subway a lot to quickly jump between areas of the plaza, great for short hops with the subway pass.  We went to the zoo for an afternoon to see the Pandas in their new habitat at the time.  We also jumped over to Arlington Cemetary...very easy.

With a vehicle, we spent way too much time & effort, and money on parking and it was a nightmare trying to drive to different areas.  We even got a parking ticket becasue we were 4 minutes past 4:00pm.  They need the streets clear for rush hour.  Just don't take any vehicle, even a small motor cycle is bad news.  Bicycles would be different.

Hi Guys...

I have lived in the area (MD,VA) many years, and Ron's words hold true!  I don't like to drive in DC, although I've done it many times (a few times pulling a horse trailer!) - the metro is certainly the way to go, and depending on what you want to see, it can easily take a few days. The Smithsonian alone can take a week.  The National Park in Greenbelt is indeed a good spot, although no hookups - 301-344-3948, or res. at 877-444-6777. I can't recommend a campground because I've not camped there!!! Smile

If you're interested, we are on the Eastern Shore, across the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis, and hook up is free!!!  It's a little far from DC, but we'd love to have you, and the crab cakes are great!!!

Enjoy your trip -- May is a beautiful time to visit DC...the cherry blossoms are in bloom now, but you'll have plenty to do!

I should have included that we spent 4 full days there and left feeling we missed out on a lot.  That much time with little kids can get testy, but if everyone is an adult and really into it, you could easily spend a week.  I regret not taking the tour of the mint.

We felt that also... ONE day was not enough, nor was one day in Manhattan where we took the train into the city.   (Just means we need to RETURN!)

DC - one of my favorite return trip vacation places.  You should be missing some of the summer youngsters, especially at the Smithsonion.  Other places such as the Art Museums rarely get the younger crowds anyway.  I took a half day and did a bicycle tour which showed me a lot I didn't know (but thought I did!).  All posts regarding using public transportation should be heeded.  try the House or Senate around dinner time - the crowds are gone but business grinds forward....Enjoy!

Thanks for all the advice on our DC trip.  We've made reservations at Cherry Hill for a week and will be using public transportation.  The campground lets you check in at 8:00 AM so that will gives us another day to site see.  I think the first night we will do the night tour with greyline.

The best way to Cherry hill is to Take I70 east to Md rt32 south/east to I95 south. Stay away from I270 and 495.  We live just off Rt32, so if you need or want an overnight, let me know, pm me. I have w/e.
