Title: Forum Update May 22nd @ 8am EST
Post by: Phoenix RV Web on May 08, 2018, 03:56:01 pm
To All Forum Members,

Just a quick heads up that we will be doing an update to the Forum on the  May 22nd @ 8am EST.  We expect that the update will be relatively quick, however you should plan on the forum not being available for approximately two hours.  The update will result in some added functionality, an updated look and feel, but still maintain all the same content and functionality that is currently there.  We wanted to give you a heads up that the change was coming, and when, so you can plan accordingly.

All the best!

Jim Byrnes

1) At least in my case the profile information has been lost.  Well some of it.  I did not look at everything but the model owned, location and some other fields are either blank or wrong.  For example it has me in a 2100 but the old forum showed 2552.

2) Was there not a way to change the color scheme on the forum with the old code?  I find the all white background too bright.

3) On the old forum the member box showed more info including what model they have.  I found that invaluable when answering questions.

Hi,
1) At least in my case the profile information has been lost.  Well some of it.  I did not look at everything but the model owned, location and some other fields are either blank or wrong.  For example it has me in a 2100 but the old forum showed 2552.
Thank you for letting us know about this profile data.  This should be corrected now.  We missed a step in the data conversion process.

2) Was there not a way to change the color scheme on the forum with the old code?  I find the all white background too bright.
We may look at some other dark themes for the default theme in the near future.  I'm not sure if you could actually change the background color before.  This theme was selected because it was the most modern (and most popular) theme compatible with the software upgrade.  It is "responsive" meaning it should function much better on phones/tablets compared to the old theme.

3) On the old forum the member box showed more info including what model they have.  I found that invaluable when answering questions.
Thanks.  We will check into this.  Not sure if this was a custom modification that may have been overlooked.

Ok, you fixed those!

I note that you are listed as owning a 2100?  Is that correct or is that the default answer?  That was what my profile listed at first.  It has changed to be correct now.  If 2100 is the default you might consider having that 'none' or something.

The space used by the profile box, with the large amount of blank space on the right seems awkward.  Is it possible to move the profile to a sidebar like it was before so we do not have all of the blank space?  I'm not all that web design literate so 'side bar' might not be the right term.

Ok, I will be constructively honest.  The new software is worse, in my humble opinion, than the old forum software.  Way too much white space!  I am viewing this on my smartphone.  And the grey text on white background is difficult for us seniors (at least me and my wife) to read.  Most modern forum software gives each user the ability to modify the background/text to colors they like.   Most modern forum software also allows the user to selecr the font size also  I see no options for any of that in my profile options.

Every message now has the profile of the member who made that post at the top.  It used to be in a sidebar, thus making the actual messages spaced too far apart... with mostly white space inbetween messages.

My wife and I are just 2 voices, maybe the others here are happy, but maybe not.  How about Phoenix post a poll to see how folks like the new look?

I used to be able to click on the link that shows all the new messages/replies.  Is there still a way to do that?  How can I find the new stuff?  I can see the "NEW" link if I page down, but it was easier to just click on the link.

Profile is now back in the sidebar!!  2o2 Thank you so much, and I really appreciate the quick response. :)(:

Now about the background color..................

Us seniors have enough trouble reading computer screens, how about some options for different colors?  Or just allow customization in user's profile.

I am also having trouble with the small grey print on white background and those oceans off empty space next to the profiles look unprofessional. If this is a canned design, it wasn't meant for more than a small snippet or image to show the poster.

I can zoom on my phone or tablet and that helps with the little print but scrolling the screen back and forth across every line as I read soon becomes tiresome.

Matrix says profile is back in the sidebar but I'm not seeing that.

I think I found your link - go to the top right of your screen where it shows your user name and a little people circle. Select that and a link for new postings is in the drop down menu.

I also quick browsed the help menu on the top bar. It tells which software is being used and explains some of the features. One option allows users to set their own theme. Since I find nowhere to do that, I'm assuming that is turned off either by administrator choice or perhaps it is a paid feature that was not purchased (if such a thing exists with this software).

That " new postings" link is also in the " forum stats" box on the right. You select the sentence. It isn't obvious it's a link.

Thanks!  Found that, but I believe it only shows Unread Topics, not Unread Messages.

I am also having trouble with the grey format on he white background -  the old was MUCH easier to read.  Also, the profile IS on a sidebar, but the body of the message is below, and does create a lot of extra space.  If the message was beside the sidebar, it would take  less... In short, I don't like the change...FWIW,
Jack

They had the massive blank space issue resolved yesterday, but it is back today.  Hopefully they are reading through everyone's comments here and are implementing what they are able in permanent fashion.

FWIW, I agree with everyone's input here, but I am happy they didn't instead pull the plug on this forum.

Yep, was going to post that but Ron beat me to it.  It was fixed yesterday (well changed :) ) but now the white space is back.

+100 on that.  I did get an email from Jim Brynes yesterday and he said they were watching the comments and would do their best to make things a good experience for forum members.  This seems to have been a big update, several versions on the forum software, as well as a move to a new server / hosting.  So keep making the comments and suggestions but have patience as they get things configured.  I took a look at the forum software manual and the config file is, extensive.  I'm sure it will take a bit to find all the quirks and settings.

Getting the sidebar back to being a sidebar is important,

The current font/ bright white background quickly strains my eyes. Not sure which is the bigger contributor, It "would be nice" to have some options such as choice of font size or even background color..such as an off white that is easier on the eyes.

Kudos/thanks for all of the work being done. Changing over a large database can be full of "oh, sh*t" moments so the fact that it is up and running as well as it is, is appreciated.  2o2

I agree about the gray color of the text along with the white background.  It would be nice to adjust them like we did in the past.  But to be honest, I can easily live with it as-is.

What I wish they could change is when we "quote" someone else, it gets framed which is fine.  But it would be nice if the white background inside the frame was different.  At a glance I don't know if I am reading a reply or a quote inside a reply.  I get confused.

I am sure they will get that big blank white space problem resolved because it comes and goes.  The setting might revert back while fixing other things.  They just need more time on that one.

I welcome the lighter background over the old dark one. Maybe if the type were a tad larger and/or darker ti would read better. Probably best if the background were a very light color it would ease the eye strain.
But all in all, thank you for your hard work and keeping this forum alive!

I recently looked at the forum page for Phoenix Cruisers for Sale by Members and was surprised to see the coach I purchased in February still listed for sale. Also, the text is yellow, virtually unreadable unless you highlight it.
Hopefully the webmaster will read this post and correct the situation. Glad to see that our website is getting some attention and a makeover. I am sure the issues raised by the membership will be corrected by the webmaster give the time and opportunity to do so.

Agree with all in that its gratifying to know the comments are monitored, and also that the forum is kept -- it provides a great deal of good information.  I hope the few suggestions are implemented...

Hi Jim,

Your instruction is not working for me.  I get each post below the poster's information making lots of blank space, rather than to the right of it.  I will have to wait and see if this is a system issue that they will resolve at their end.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Same here especially the gray text on a white background.  These 75 year old eyes can't read this style and trying to see the small font on an iPhone is dang near impossible.  This text color seems to be the popular thing among young web designers as I have critiqued MyFitnessPal (UnderArmor Co.) and others for the same issue.  It's hard on us old guys.

One other thing, our profile shows us owning a used 2012 PC2100.  Actually, we own a used 2012 PC2400 Sprinter.  I went to the profile change and all that was offered was 2400 Ford!  Please fix.  Thank you.   :)(:

Ron, that happens to me when I use the Safari option to enlarge the text. I'm guessing it has something to do with space so you may need a larger monitor.

I have a very big laptop computer here at home., a wide screen for sure, and I have the blank space here.  But at work I have a 32" wide computer screen and the blank space is gone.  So IT DOES HAVE TO DO WITH the size of the screen.  That is too bad.  If I make the text any smaller here at home, I won't be able to read it at all.   :'(

Just figured that out myself.  Thought I was going nuts.  One computer = no white space.  Second computer = white space.  Slide the browser window a bit wider and the white space disappears.  :-D
Title: Re: Forum Update May 22nd @ 8am EST
Post by: Ron Dittmer on May 30, 2018, 05:59:32 pm
The cut-off point between having white space or not, is not good.  If only they could control when to make the switch.

Experimenting a little, if you reduce the side-to-side size of the window even more, the side bar with our info takes up the entire window.  It leaves me to think that might be the reason for white space generation.  Maybe if they locked-down the size of the member side bar, that just might stop the crazy phenomena.
Title: Re: Forum Update May 22nd @ 8am EST
Post by: jatrax on May 30, 2018, 06:30:25 pm
Now that I think about it, this is by design.  It is called "responsive design" and allows a website to adapt to the size of the screen.  So "locking it down" is counter to the design philosophy.  This is so that the site displays properly on mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.

Google has made it clear that unless your site is "mobile friendly" you are going to get downgraded in their search.  So most everyone is moving to this style of design in some form or other.

I still wonder if there isn't some option that would improve things for many folks..i.e turn the sidebar into a top bar?  Minimize the author information but provide a clickable button for more details?  other options?  (WH)

The side bar displaying member information seems nicely lay'd out and fairly compact.  I fear making it smaller might make matters worse.  But that is hard to anticipate.

I've noticed that quite a bit of screen real estate is grabbed by the left margin.  I do not recall it being quite that extensive in the former layout.  Generally seeing limited problems in navigating the new blog, although the [Preview] function does not work for me.  But, for what we're paying for, I can't complain too much.

First, we just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their patience during the software upgrade and also for the valuable feedback.   tymote

Also, thank you for helping and supporting each other when possible.  It's likely that many of the seasoned members on the board are able to answer some forum related questions better than we can.

The current default theme seems to be the major complaint.  This theme was chosen as the default as it appeared to be the most popular based on the modern features it has. Specifically, that it has a responsive design and tries to move things around to fit different form factors (Desktop, Tablet, Mobile)  However, it seems there are some "in-between" screen sizes that just don't look right. (profile info moved above but not centered, etc.)

If you will notice, there is a new post under General Discussion "How to change your PC Cruiser Forum Theme".  We are installing these themes as-is from the publishers (not making modifications) and we may add more in the future (and will make an announcement when we do).

Also, we think we have the issues fixed with the custom profile fields. (certain models not available, etc.)

Please let us know if you have any other issues.

Thanks!

Same here. It also jumps me to the unread entries. It took me a few to find how to get back one level but I finally found it at the bottom of the page instead of the top like it used to be. It makes sense since that's where you are when you finish that topic. My aging brain just has to get used to it and stop automatically hitting " go up".

Plus, I love Green Man. I have him on one of my hippie rags.

It seems fairly easy to post photo's, both web-hosted or from your computer. (I use chrome, other browsers may differ)

For a web-hosted picture, like this one of Hyptnotoad, I do this:

1) find the picture you want to use
2) right click and select 'open image in new tab'
3) copy the address in the resulting tab, in this case it is  http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/futurama/hypnotoad-smiley-emoticon.gif
4) in the 'buttons' above the text box, select the 'image' button - (https://www.phoenixusarv.com/community/Themes/Studio/images/bbc/img.gif)
5) between the {img} and {/img} insert the address you got before.
6)(http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/futurama/hypnotoad-smiley-emoticon.gif)

To upload a picture from your computer, first make sure it is less than 240kb in size. Use a free online resizer if it is too big.
1) Below where it says 'Attachments and other options'  in blue, click on it. 'Attach' and 'choose file' will appear.
2) Click 'choose file'. A window will open, and you can navigate to your picture.
3) choose the pic you want, then 'open'. This will return you to the composition page, and next to 'Choose file'  you will now see the name of the picture you selected.
4) to add more pics from the computer, click on 'more attachments' and repeat steps 2 and 3

I have not yet found out how to put the attachments 'in line' in the post, they always seem to land at the end.

It would appear that web-hosted pics are visible to unregistered guests, but attachments are not.  :'(  Kinda stinks for visitors, as many posts NEED the pictures to be clear.

Hope this helped!

My Attached Photo, hope this brings a smile.   :-D

I believe the reason for being so cumbersome is so that these web pages are loaded much more quickly.  The pictures are links to websites, so our interaction goes quickly.  If the full size picture could be loaded directly into this forum, we would be complaining how slow it is to work the forum.

Also, the cost for having a forum is reduced because it uses so little memory by comparison having every picture and video stored within the forum.
