Ford 350 vs 450
« on: December 29, 2014, 10:05:36 pm »
I am still in the market for a 2551 and there is a 2006 for sale that is on a Ford 350 chassis. I have also seen 2551 on the Ford 450 chassis. What are the differences between them and why would you choose one over the other? Is there a price between them?

Thanks,

Judi

Judi,
Check the cargo caring capacity of a 2551 on a E-350.  I believe that the 350's gross weight is about 2000 pounds less than a 450.  Also, reading on this forum you will find that E-350 owners have made many suspension changes to make their rigs handle better.  In November I purchased a 2008 2551 on a E-450 and so far have not been disappointed in the handling and according to the factory placard I have about 2600# cargo caring capacity (I have not weighed the PC yet to confirm the weight - on the list of things to do).

450 = 4.56 gear ratio, 350 = 4.10 gear ratio. Also I believe the rear axle on the 450 is a few inches wider

Hi Judi,

Phoenix changed from the E350 to the E450 on model 2551 around 2007 because the E350 was getting close to the maximum allowable load.  I cannot say that it is a bad idea to buy an older 2551 on the E350 chassis.  It is simply less desirable.  If I were you, I would call the factory and ask to talk with Kermit.  He made the decision to switch from the E350 to E450 on that particular model.  He would have the best advise for you.

The general consensus is that the E450 is preferred, but an E350 is not all bad news because it will yield about a 10% increase in fuel economy along with a softer ride.

Buying the rig used, there is one primary thing you will want to know about.  That is whether an aftermarket heavy duty rear stabilizer bar was installed.  If not, I would not consider it a deal breaker, but rather negotiate $400 less to get that component added after you purchase the rig.  Actually I would advise to add more than that rear stabilizer bar to further improve handling.  I'd replace the front stabilizer bar with a heavy duty one along with better shock absorbers and steering stabilizer.   Hopefully the rig you are considering has much or all of that already done for you.

I had a 2006, 2551 with E350. It was fine with no modifications. It got  1 mpg better gas mileage than my 2552 on a E450.

I had no problems at all.

What happened is they went to a wider and heavier slide out which made them go to the E450. But there is no overweight problem with 2006 model.

If it drives OK for you buy it.

I just noticed you are in Wis, that's where mine ended up after I traded it in. Does it have 4 solar panels on it?

Thanks for the comments. I'm all about making an informed decision! The one I'm looking at is in Colorado and came from NY. They do move around!
