Humming noise
« on: January 20, 2012, 05:24:22 pm »
There is a humming noise while plugged in, a charger? On our 2350 that noise kept getting louder, on our new 2552 I hear it again but much softer. Is anything I can do to turn it off or is it nessary? When it goes on it only lasts for a few minutes. Does anyone know what I am talking about?
Thanks.   Dale

Hi Dale,

It is either the converter or inverter cooling fan.  I can go over details with you if you are going to be here at Buckskin State Park.  I saw a Phoenix Cruiser going through Lake Havasu City a few hours ago, was that you?

Hi Bob,
That would be great! We are staying in site 62. It wasn't us, we are leaving early Sunday morning, will you still be there? We can hardly wait to get there. Are you at your camp site now? We are looking forward to some warmer weather next week. See you soon.

Since the innards of a converter or an inverter involve a change in voltage and a transformer, we need to turn to the old joke told in electrical engineering classes.  Q:  Why does a transformer hum?  A: Because it doesn't know the words.

So now you know what the humming noise is.

Jerry, you are correct, transformers do hum, but my experience with the inverter and converter under the passenger seat in my 2551 was that the objectionable noise was from the inverter cooling fan.  When I meet up with Dale, we will see if the noise is actually a hum or a fan noise.

You're right, the noise is the fan.  You can tell that from the fact that the noise is intermittent because the fan comes on when the unit is getting too hot.  But there aren't any fan jokes in the EE curriculim.

I've completed installing the new inverter switch #sw-3822. I have not yet tested the installation with 110V. The PC is in storage.

Dale may like this solution to the noise.

Thanks for the advice.

George,

If the noise Dale is experiencing is the inverter cooling fan (which is probably the case), then I will share that mod with him.  Glad you got it done, let me know how it tests out for you.

Hi dale,

We can see your rig as well, the 49er game is just beginning so I will be busy for the next few hours unless they fall apart.  We are going to Quartzsite tomorrow with some friends if the weather is ok, will check with you when we return.

About Inverter fan noise.....

We handle our older Tripp-Lite power consumption  by shutting it down on the inverter itself.  There is a small switch on the upper right area by the LEDs there.  Placing that switch in the middle of the 3 positions kills the inverter completely which is very important when in storage and also when dry camping.

So in saving power, the fan noise and LED blinking is gone which is great when sleeping.  We only turn on the inverter manually when we want 110v.  This subject gets deeper on the older inverters.  My old thread here covers this in great detail:  http://www.phoenixusarv.com/community/index.php/topic,73.0.html
